The UK may ban Mancozeb! The current enrollment expires at the end of January 2024

2024-01-15

Recently, the UK Health and Safety Executive HSEhas proposed to withdraw approval for Mancozeb, the active ingredient in fungicides, which will be a significant development with implications for the agricultural sector.

This decision follows a comprehensive review under Article 21 of Regulation (EC) 1107/2009 retained by the European Union, which allows HSE to reassess the approval of any pesticide active substance in the light of new scientific data. The review of the evaluation of the most recent evidence and data submitted by UPL and Indofil Industries regarding Mancozeb has concluded that Mancozeb no longer meets the necessary criteria for approval. This conclusion could lead to significant changes in the use of Mancozeb in the UK.

Currently, the approval for Mancozeb in the UK is due to expire on 31 January 2024, however the HSE has indicated that this approval may be temporarily extended for three months, subject to confirmation. UPL and Indofil Industries said they are committed to working closely with global and UK stakeholders, as well as UK authorities, to maintain the availability of Mancozeb in the UK market.

Mancozeb is a highly protective and well-established fungicide used to prevent plant diseases in paddy, soybeans, wheat, Onions, potatoes, and other vegetables and fruits. In the agrochemical industry, Mancozeb is increasingly becoming an important tool for managing fungicide resistance. UPL pioneered the introduction of Mancozeb in soybean production in 2014 and has proven its effectiveness in controlling fungal diseases, promoting growth and increasing yields.
