Evonik to Upgrade MetAmino Production Plant in Singapore
The upgrade of MetAmino (DL-methionine) production facilities at Evonik's Singapore site is proceeding as planned. After a three-month shutdown in the fourth quarter of 2023, MetAmino production in Jurong Island is operating at full capacity again. A shutdown of the second MetAmino production facilities will need to be forced to close in the second quarter of 2024.
The upgrade is part of the implementation of Evonik's methionine asset strategy to maintain long-term sustainable global supply security, based on its state-of-the-art production centers in three regions of the world: Singapore, Mobile, Alabama, USA and Antwerp, Belgium.
"As the only global supplier of methionine, we are able to provide security of supply to our customers around the world. In addition to this, we constantly seek to improve the sustainability of our production plants," says Dr. Dirk Hoehler, head of the Essential Nutrition business at Evonik's Animal Nutrition business line. For the ongoing upgrade in Singapore, another plant closure was required in the second quarter due to the inability to implement the necessary measures in daily operations.
The upgrade will improve the efficiency of factory processes and reduce the carbon footprint of MetAmino products at the Singapore factory by 6% (Scope 1+2+3).
The carbon footprint is reduced thanks to several modifications: the use of green hydrogen, intensive energy integration and innovative solutions to improve circularity by recycling meta-amino groups and raw materials.
