Evonik partners with Jland Biotech to develop vegan collagen

ECHEMI 2024-02-27

Evonik announced a collaboration with Chinese company Jland Biotech to develop vegan collagen for cosmetics and personal care applications. In order to achieve a long-term and stable partnership, Evonik invested in Jland Biotech through its venture capital group. The collaboration will enable Evonik to scale collagen products and create synergies with its portfolio of active ingredients and delivery systems for use in skin care products such as anti-aging and moisturizers.

Evonik's new collagen product, produced in partnership with Jland Biotech, will be launched later this year, expanding Evonik’s existing vegan collagen portfolio. Evonik recently launched its own vegan collagen, Vecollage™ Fortify L, for use in cosmetics and personal care.

Johann-Caspar Gammelin, President of Evonik Nutrition & Care, said: "Evonik Life Sciences leverages the expertise of its partners through its biotechnology platform to collaborate on precision biological solutions. We welcome Jland Biotech to our partner network. With our combined expertise in active ingredients and delivery systems, we are creating a world-leading portfolio of non-animal derived collagen products."

Yann d'Hervé, head of Evonik's Care Solutions business line, said: "We value Jland Biotech's outstanding innovative approach and look forward to helping our customers develop the scientifically advanced beauty solutions that consumers around the world are seeking. "

Chang Liang, chairman of Jland Biotech, said: "This powerful alliance with Evonik will inject new impetus into Jland Biotech's expansion of the vegan collagen industry chain, innovatively build a new industry ecological pattern, and promote the development of greener, safer, and sustainable vegan collagen products."

Collagen is used as a bioactive substance in cosmetics and personal care products to improve skin elasticity and hydration. Vegan collagen is produced through a controlled fermentation process using yeast or bacteria as engineered cells and offers several advantages over animal-derived collagen. Its production process is simpler, it is easier to be absorbed by the skin, it has lower immunogenicity and smaller batch-to-batch quality differences, and is highly reproducible. As the consumer market's focus on highly effective, sustainable bioactive ingredients continues to rise, so too does the demand from formulators for such ingredients. Vegan collagen is in line with global sustainability trends and is expected to become one of the key ingredients in cosmetics and personal care products.
