Syensqo expands its bio-based product portfolio with new MTM epoxy resin

Syensqo, formerly part of the Solvay Group, has developed a new version of its flagship MTM 49-3 resin containing 30% biosourced monomers. The new product variants complement the company's MTM advanced prepreg portfolio and target structural automotive applications including body panels, chassis components and spoilers.

"Our new bio-based MTM 49-3 will help OEMs and Tiers reduce fossil consumption and achieve carbon neutrality goals while ensuring the same high levels of quality, processability and mechanical properties as their original counterparts," said Dr. Greg Kelly, Head of Compound Product Management at Syensqo.

Like existing materials, Syensqo's new bio-based MTMR 49-3 has a dry glass transition temperature (Tg) of 190°C and offers enhanced toughness and superior impact resistance compared to competing thermoset prepregs. Thanks to its high strength-to-weight ratio, component mass can be reduced by up to 40% compared to metal. The product is compatible with autoclave and pressing conversion processes and can cure in 60 minutes at 135°C. Additionally, it is designed for operator safety and contains no carcinogens, mutagens or reproductive toxins.
