Mitsui Chemicals increases XDI production capacity at Omuta plant by 20%

ECHEMI 2024-03-04

Mitsui Chemicals announced that it will expand the production capacity of the xylylene diisocyanate (XDI) plant at the Omuta plant by 20%. The expansion is in response to growing demand for hardeners used in paints that are less susceptible to yellowing.

XDI is a special type of isocyanate. Mitsui Chemicals was the first company in the world to commercially produce it. XDI is widely recognized as a high refractive index material for use in ophthalmic lenses. It has high durability. Thanks to its excellent resistance to yellowing and fast curing properties, XDI is also considered a coating and functional material.

Demand for XDI is expected to increase further. This is due to shifts in quality of life and demand for hybrid materials. Items driving demand include adhesives for food packaging, which must meet particularly stringent safety standards, special inks and coating materials used in solar cells and smartphones, and Microcapsules with high level of safety.

Therefore, Mitsui Chemicals responded to this growing demand by expanding the XDI plant at the Omuta Plant.

Mitsui Chemicals' long-term business plan "VISION 2030" includes a commitment to meeting environmental needs in the processing solutions sector. As production capacity increases, Mitsui Chemicals will continue to actively build its supply system.
