Suspected Salmonella Contamination Leads to Recall of Ham Products in Guatemala

ECHEMI 2024-04-03

In a recent development, a batch of ham products in Guatemala has been recalled due to suspected contamination with Salmonella. This recall was initiated by Pricemart, a prominent warehouse supermarket in the United States, after it released a statement expressing concerns over the potential Salmonella contamination in the ham products manufactured by Fratelli Beretta USA. The recall affects various sliced sausage products under the "Antipasto Gran Beretta" series, including black pepper-coated salami, Italian-flavored salami, and smoked pork neck sausage. The affected products have an expiration date of June 13.

Recall Details:

According to reports from Diaco, the Consumer Protection and Assistance Department in Guatemala, the recall includes specific sales points in the 5th, 10th, and 11th districts of Guatemala City, as well as sales points along the highways leading to El Salvador, San Cristóbal, and Escuintla. While there have been recalls of five different products this year in Guatemala due to potential contamination or damage, there have been no reported cases of consumers being directly affected by the recalled products.

Importance of Timely Recalls:

Carlos Vásquez, a representative from Diaco, emphasized the importance of timely recalls and the responsibility of registered companies to notify health authorities about potential contamination. It is crucial for companies to inform Diaco about the proper disposal methods for the recalled products. By taking swift action, companies can minimize the risk of consumers purchasing contaminated items, thus safeguarding public health.

Salmonella and its Risks:

Salmonella is a bacterium commonly found in various foods, including poultry, beef, pork, eggs, fruits, vegetables, and processed foods. Previous outbreaks of Salmonella contamination have been reported in flour, peanut butter, salami, pre-packaged salads, and ground turkey. Symptoms of Salmonella infection may include diarrhea lasting for more than three days, bloody stools, prolonged vomiting, high fever, stomach cramps, and dehydration.

Underreporting of Salmonella Cases:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States has highlighted that for every reported case of Salmonella infection, there may be more than 30 unreported cases. This discrepancy indicates the need for improved surveillance and reporting systems to effectively address the risks associated with Salmonella contamination.

The recall of ham products in Guatemala due to suspected Salmonella contamination serves as a reminder of the potential risks posed by foodborne pathogens. Prompt actions by companies and regulatory agencies are essential in ensuring the safety of consumers and preventing the spread of infections. Consumers are advised to stay informed about product recalls and follow proper food safety practices to minimize the risk of foodborne illnesses.
