In a recent development, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has conducted an evaluation regarding the safety and efficacy of muramidase produced by Trichoderma reesei DSM 32338 as an animal feed additive. This assessment was carried out in response to a request from the European Commission. The findings of the EFSA evaluation shed light on the potential use of this enzyme in animal nutrition.


Safety Evaluation:

The expert panel from the EFSA, known as the Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP), concluded that under the recommended conditions of use, the additive derived from Trichoderma reesei DSM 32338 is safe for the target animal species, consumers, and the environment. The assessment revealed that the enzyme, when used at a level of 30,000 LSU(F)/kg complete feed for laying hens, can serve as an effective technological additive. The evaluation also indicated that there were no safety concerns related to the genetic modification of the production strain.


Efficacy Evaluation:

The EFSA panel determined that the muramidase additive has the potential to be efficacious as a zootechnical additive for laying hens when included in the feed at a concentration of 30,000 LSU(F)/kg. This assessment opens up possibilities for enhancing animal performance and productivity through the incorporation of this enzyme into their diets.


Based on the scientific opinion provided by the EFSA, muramidase produced by Trichoderma reesei DSM 32338 has been deemed safe and effective for use as an animal feed additive.
