Sika opens new plant in Liaoning, China

ECHEMI 2024-06-14

Sika has opened a new plant in Liaoning, the largest province in northeastern China. The plant will produce a full range of products including mortars, tile adhesives and waterproofing solutions. The efficient new plant enables Sika to meet market demands while significantly reducing logistical distances.

The Liaoning plant will serve Sika's customers in China's three northeastern provinces, which have a population of more than 98 million, as well as in central and eastern Mongolia. In addition to state-of-the-art production lines, the new plant also offers office space, laboratories, warehousing and logistics. Sika currently has 34 production sites in China and has been active in the Chinese market for more than three decades.

Philippe Jost, Sika's Regional Manager for Asia Pacific, said: "The new mortar plant in Liaoning is an important milestone in our growth strategy. It allows us to better serve our customers in northeastern China with faster delivery times and higher service levels. This expansion strengthens our commitment to quality and excellence, while also being in line with Sika's global sustainability goals."

The Liaoning plant will produce a range of mortar products using up to 20% recycled raw materials, such as waste dust and mineral waste residues, in the manufacturing process. In addition, Sika has initiated a program to transition from natural sand to alternative sand. In 2023, Sika China has reached a 13% alternative sand ratio in its mortar production, with half of its plants contributing to the plan. Looking ahead, Sika China plans to replace 50% of its overall sand consumption with alternative sand by 2028.

The Chinese construction market is expected to reach CHF 4.2 trillion by 2024, with a CAGR of 3.9% expected to increase by 2028. As part of the current five-year plan, the government has allocated more than CHF 500 billion for bond issuance for infrastructure projects. In addition, China will invest CHF 12 trillion in green transformation to achieve net zero emissions by 2060, bringing demand for sustainable solutions.
