Comprehensive Reports from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)

ECHEMI 2024-07-09

On July 3, 2024, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) released four detailed investigation reports, conducting in-depth analysis on the undeclared allergens and gluten in coconut water, as well as other food safety issues.

(1) In a targeted investigation on coconut water products from 2021-22, we thoroughly examined the undeclared allergens and gluten content in the products. After meticulous testing of 85 samples, we regrettably found that one sample contained an undeclared soy ingredient. This discovery underscores the need for a more cautious approach towards potential allergens and gluten content in food products.

(2) We also conducted a similar investigation on ground spices and herbs from 2021-22. Out of 249 samples tested, we found 65 samples with undeclared gluten or allergens, such as peanuts, sesame, and soy. This result highlights the oversights of food producers in ingredient labeling, which may pose unnecessary health risks to some consumers.

(3) To comprehensively evaluate food quality, we also conducted baseline monitoring on the metal content of other CFIA-unmonitored food products from 2021-22. Out of 422 imported meat, seafood, sugar, and syrup samples tested, we found that the vast majority (85%) contained one or more metal elements. This data provides an important reference for the metal content in foods, and also warns us to be more attentive in our food choices.

(4) Finally, we conducted targeted testing on vibrant products that may contain added coloring from 2022-23. We collected 190 samples of frozen desserts, spices, candies, and vegetable products, and conducted detailed testing on 43 different food dyes. The results showed an overall compliance rate of 96.8%, reflecting the food producers' unwavering efforts and respect for consumer health in ensuring food safety.
