Covestro opens fourth trimer production plant in India after plants in China, Germany and the US
Covestro India, a leading manufacturer of high-performance polymers, has launched a trimer production facility at its Ankleshwar plant in Gujarat.
The trimer plant is the first of its kind in India, reflecting Covestro India's commitment to the "Make in India" program, enhancing local manufacturing capabilities and contributing to India's position as a global manufacturing hub.
The company will produce a range of Desmodur ultra trimer products for use in the automotive, construction, wooden furniture, and consumer electronics sectors. With trimer products, Covestro aims to meet the growing demand for high-performance and sustainable solutions in the coatings and adhesives industries in the Asia-Pacific region. The first batch of Desmodur ultra trimer products is scheduled to be put into production in the fourth quarter of 2024.
Desmodur ultra trimer products are essential for the production of coatings and adhesives. They have excellent durability and resistance to environmental factors such as UV rays, chemicals and physical wear.
Thomas Roemer, Global Head of Coatings & Adhesives Business Entity at Covestro, said: “This is great news for our local team and our customers in the region. We are continuously investing in our production capabilities in Asia to strengthen our leading position in the aliphatic isocyanates business and to provide high-quality products to our customers in the region.”
“This new investment aims to strengthen the localization of differentiated Desmodur ultra trimer products, in line with the market trend of low VOC emissions, high performance and increased efficiency in the coatings and adhesives industry,” said Anand Khot, Head of Coatings & Adhesives Business Entity Asia Pacific at Covestro.
By establishing this production facility in India, Covestro is not only strengthening its global supply chain, but also reinforcing its commitment to supporting the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ vision by creating jobs, promoting technology transfer and contributing to the local economy.
The new plant is Covestro’s fourth dedicated trimer plant worldwide, with production currently in China, Germany, the United States and India, underscoring the company’s commitment to serving customers around the world.
The project also reflects Covestro’s commitment to sustainability. The technology selected for trimer production in Ankleshwar is designed to support sustainable manufacturing practices and significantly reduce carbon emissions. This is in line with the company’s goals regarding circularity and climate neutrality and helps make the chemical industry a driver of a circular, green world.
