South Korea Reports 4,279 Cases of Norovirus Outbreaks in the Past Five Years; Winter is the Most Dangerous!
On November 22, 2024, the Korea Food and Drug Safety Agency (MFDS) released a statistical report on norovirus poisoning in South Korea over the past five years. The main contents of the report are as follows:
(1) Between 2019 and 2023 (nearly five years), a total of 4,279 cases of norovirus food poisoning were recorded, mainly in the winter months of December to February of the following year, accounting for 49% of the total food poisoning cases. It is worth noting that there was a significant decrease in incidence in August and September;
(2) Foodborne norovirus infections are mainly due to the consumption of inadequately cooked fish and shellfish, especially raw oysters. Oyster products labeled "hot cooking" or "cooked" must be heated to a central temperature of 85°C for at least 1 minute before they are safe to eat.
