Qatar Launches World's Largest Blue Ammonia Plant with an Investment of $8.8 Billion!
On November 26, 2024, Qatar Energy Investment Company officially began the construction of its blue ammonia plant located in Mesaieed Industrial City. This project has garnered significant attention as it will become the largest blue ammonia production facility globally upon completion.
The construction of the blue ammonia plant symbolizes a major step for Qatar Energy Investment Company in the global energy sector. This move will not only solidify the company's position in the global ammonia production arena but also promote advancements in low-carbon energy technologies.
The total investment for the plant amounts to 4.4 billion Qatari riyals, approximately 8.8 billion RMB. The project includes an ammonia production facility with an annual output of 1.2 million tons and a carbon capture and storage facility with a processing capacity of 1.5 million tons per year. This advanced plant is expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2026.
Blue ammonia is a low-carbon ammonia produced using advanced carbon capture and storage technologies, effectively reducing CO2 emissions. Qatar Energy has indicated that to support the new plant's operations, it will utilize over 35 megawatts of electricity from a solar power plant currently under construction in Mesaieed Industrial City.
Qatar Energy emphasizes that the blue ammonia plant's construction is a key component of its global expansion strategy. By producing low-carbon ammonia, the company is making significant progress in its clean energy strategy and driving the transition to a low-carbon economy worldwide.
