GSK Launches 5-in-1 Meningococcal Vaccine Eyeing $1.1 Billion Sales by 2030
GSK is stepping into the spotlight with its newly approved 5-in-1 meningococcal vaccine, named Penmenvy, aimed at protecting individuals aged 10 to 25 against five major serogroups responsible for invasive meningococcal disease (IMD). This vaccine has received FDA approval, positioning GSK to compete directly with Pfizer, which held the market's only 5-in-1 vaccine until now.
The Penmenvy vaccine combines the antigenic components of GSK’s existing vaccines, Bexsero and Menveo, to provide broader protection with fewer doses. Clinical trials demonstrated that Penmenvy, administered in two doses six months apart, achieved immunological noninferiority compared to a single dose of Menveo and elicited strong immune responses against 110 MenB strains.
Despite the vaccine's promise, uptake remains concerningly low, with only 32% of adolescents starting the MenB vaccination series and less than 13% completing it. This is critical as adolescents aged 16 to 23 are particularly vulnerable to IMD, a disease that can become fatal within 24 hours of onset. GSK's U.S. medical affairs lead highlighted the urgent need for increased awareness and vaccination rates.
The complexity of the current meningococcal vaccination schedule contributes to low uptake. The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has recommended shared decision-making for MenB vaccinations, allowing healthcare providers and families to collaborate on vaccination choices.
GSK's entry into the market comes after Pfizer’s Penbraya, which was launched in 2023 and also targets the MenABCWY groups through a two-dose regimen. The ACIP is considering a similar recommendation for Penmenvy, which could enhance its accessibility and uptake.
Despite Pfizer’s head start, GSK is projected to maintain its leadership in the meningococcal vaccine market, with forecasts suggesting Penmenvy could achieve $1.1 billion in global sales by 2030. In contrast, Penbraya is expected to reach around $606 million in the same timeframe.
With GSK’s established vaccines already contributing significantly to its sales—Bexsero surpassing $1 billion in 2024 and Menveo generating €387 million (approximately $406 million)—the introduction of Penmenvy is a strategic move to bolster its market position further. As GSK prepares for the next steps, the healthcare community is poised to see how this new offering will impact meningococcal disease prevention efforts.
