It has properties such as a melting point of -95℃, viscosity of 0.32 cP at a temperature of 20 ℃, acidity of 19.16±0.04 pKa, it is soluble in water, ethanol, isopropanol and toluene.

Where is acetone found in nature?

This organic compound is found in the environment, in some plants, in trees, in the gases emitted by volcanoes, it is produced in forest fires, and in the degradation of fats in organisms.

It is also present in the gas emissions of combustion engines used in vehicles, in the smoke as waste from cigarettes and tobacco, and in garbage dumps found in all places of population concentration.

How is acetone obtained?

At industrial levels, it has been possible to produce much more acetone than what occurs naturally and spontaneously in the environment.

Industrially, this chemical compound is obtained from substances such as calcium acetate, acetic acid and petroleum gases. The methods used for its production are catalytic hydrolysis processes, where phenol, a co-product of this synthesis, is obtained through acidic hydroperoxide cumene media.

Other methods to obtain acetone are known as catalytic dehydrogenation based on isopropyl alcohol, biofermentation, polypropylene oxidation, and diisopropylbenzene oxidation.
