Soaring 139%! The Chemical Raw Material Price Increase List Is Here!

ECHEMI 2022-03-30

Recently, Zhejiang Changxing Hongyue Non-metallic Materials Co., Ltd. issued a price adjustment letter, saying that due to the rapid rise in the prices of raw materials and diesel, production costs and transportation costs have continued to increase, and it has decided to increase the price of talc series by 60 CNY/ton from April 1. , the price of heavy calcium carbonate series was increased by 50 CNY/ton.

Upstream raw materials are caught in a "mess battle", and coating companies are passively under pressure

The rise in chemicals since the beginning of the year seems to have never stopped, but the logic behind each product's price rise is different. The more optimistic reason is the popularity of downstream industries, such as the "lithium family" products in the new energy vehicle industry chain. According to data from the CPCA Passenger Association, the retail sales of new energy vehicles reached 272,624 units in February, a year-on-year increase of 180.9%. The National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration also proposed that by 2025, the proportion of new energy vehicle sales will reach about 20%, and the proportion of non-fossil energy consumption will further increase significantly on the basis of reaching 25% in 2030.

Since the beginning of July last year, the prices of chemical products in the new energy vehicle industry chain have soared, lithium carbonate has increased by about 500%, lithium hydroxide has increased by about 400%, ternary materials have increased by about 130%, and lithium iron phosphate materials have increased by about 220%. The electrolyte rose by about 40%, and the prices of anode materials and separators also increased slightly.

Due to changes in the international situation, many commodities including crude oil, natural gas, industrial metals, grains, fertilizers, etc. have risen, and the domestic chemical industry chain has also risen. Such as urea (+16.89%), propane (+12.24%), potassium nitrate (+20.86%), liquid ammonia (+12.32%), carbon black (+5.72%), ethanol (+4.11%), melamine (+27.59 %), potassium sulfate (+22.58%), potassium chloride (+75.32%), monoammonium phosphate (+9.73%), diammonium phosphate (+1.11%), etc. are all chemicals whose prices have increased under the influence of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict The escalation of the conflict in late February intensified the gains in these chemicals, which were already on the rise.

It is not difficult to see that the rise in energy prices is often positive and pushes up the prices of upstream raw materials, but for mid- and downstream products, the increase in most varieties is far less than that of the upstream. Excessive crude oil prices are not good for the downstream, and the coatings industry has become one of the most "tragic" industries.

For example, PTA has risen by 1264.73 CNY/ton, and neopentyl glycol has risen by 683.33 CNY/ton. For polyester resin, it will cause greater cost pressure, and eventually cause indoor polyester resin and outdoor polyester resin to rise respectively. 3,000 CNY/ton, 2,000 CNY/ton, an increase of 27.27%, 14.81%.

In addition, the increase of VAE emulsion, elastic acrylic emulsion and styrene-butadiene emulsion was 57%, 39% and 35% respectively; the increase of isocyanate, the main raw material of polyurethane waterproof and coating, was 54%. Asphalt, SBS and polyester tires increased by 36%, 30% and 43% respectively. Titanium dioxide has risen for 20 consecutive months, and since the beginning of the year, more than 20 leading titanium dioxide companies have announced a sharp rise in product prices.
