INVISTA builds the world's largest nylon 66 comprehensive base builds the world's largest nylon 66 comprehensive base

ECHEMI 2022-08-30

From August 16th to 29th, the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment announced the acceptance of the EIA for the expansion project of the INVISTA Yinglong production base. EIA documents show that INVISTA will debottleneck its hexamethylenediamine (HMD) plant and polymer plant in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Zone to increase production capacity.

According to the EIA document, INVISTA will expand the existing hexamethylenediamine HMD plant and the polymer plant boundary, and will not add new land. The total investment for the expansion of the HMD project is about 200 million yuan, and the total investment for the expansion of the polymer factory is about 15 million yuan. The de-bottleneck project is expected to start construction in 2022 and be fully operational in 2024.

The expansion includes two parts: one is to increase the annual production capacity of HMD from the current 215,000 tons to 316,000 tons, an increase of 101,000 tons. The second is to debottleneck the four production lines built in the polymer factory in 2014, increasing the annual production capacity of polymers from the current 152,000 tons to 189,700 tons, an increase of 37,700 tons. After the debottleneck transformation is completed, plus the annual production capacity of 50,000 tons of a production line that does not need to be transformed, the total annual production capacity of the five production lines in the polymer plant will reach 239,700 tons.

The EIA document also shows that INVISTA plans to build a polymer workshop and related supporting facilities on the existing open space of the polymer factory, which is the 2.0 project. The project includes 3 continuous polymerization production lines and 2 batch polymerization production lines, which can increase the annual production capacity of nylon 66 by 242,500 tons. The total investment of this project is about 1.75 billion yuan. It is expected to start construction this year and put into production in 2024. The EIA of the project was approved in May 2022. After the completion of the 2.0 project and the debottleneck transformation project, the INVISTA polymer plant can achieve an annual production capacity of 482,200 tons, so as to ease the pressure on China's nylon 66 demand.

Since 2013, INVISTA has established INVISTA Nylon Chemical (China) Co., Ltd. in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Zone to build a nylon 66 production base. tons of nylon 66 polymer plant, and start construction of a third-phase adiponitrile (ADN) plant in 2020. EIA documents show that the main raw material of the polymer plant, hexamethylenediamine, is provided by the company's hexamethylenediamine plant, and the other raw material, adipic acid, is planned to be purchased from the domestic, Japanese and American markets. The main raw material of the hexamethylene diamine plant, adiponitrile, is provided by the third-phase adiponitrile plant and INVISTA's US or other suppliers.

After the factories involved in the EIA document are put into operation, INVISTA will have a complete industrial value chain from adiponitrile to high-performance polymers in Shanghai, and become the world's largest comprehensive nylon 66 production base.
