1.Sulphric (vi) acid
This acid is a byproduct of sulphur dioxide production and is used in the manufacture of fertilizers, dyes, hair colouring agents and pharmaceuticals. This acid is used in many chemical reactions like synthesizing various sulphur containing compounds. This acid is produced through anhydrous process which involves electrolysis of a sulfuric acid solution. It is a colourless liquid with pungent odour and very corrosive in nature. It is mainly used as a catalyst in fertilizer production.
2.Nitric (v) acid
It is also known as aqua fortis and it is prepared by oxidation of ammonia with nitrous fumes of air or pure oxygen. This acid is highly corrosive and has a characteristic hissing sound while reacting with water. It has very strong oxidizing properties. Nitric acid is used in the preparation of fertilizers, organic compounds, dyes etc., and also used in rocket fuel production due to its oxidizing properties. It is a colourless, highly volatile liquid and has a pungent odour. This answers the question, what acid is manufactured in largest quantity?
3.Carbonic acid
It is also known as aqua regia and it is prepared by combining carbon dioxide with water and adding a dilute nitric acid solution. This reaction proceeds until all the carbon dioxide has been absorbed in the water phase. It is a colourless or pale yellow liquid which may turn green after addition of copper or iron salts to the solution. It forms many red-brown precipitates when diluted with sulphuric acid or copper acetate solution, respectively. Carbonic acid can be used as a powerful solvent for gold, silver and other precious metals etc.
4.Hydrochloric acid
It is also called muriatic acid and it is prepared by combining chlorine with sodium chloride solution. It has a pungent odour and an acrid taste. It is used in the preparation of dyes, disinfectants, pharmaceuticals, bleaches etc. It is used as an antiseptic and in the manufacture of antacid, rubber etc. This acid can be easily dissolved in excess caustic soda solution to form hydrochloric acid present in basic solution that causes fire due to carbon dioxide released from the sodium chloride when this reaction takes place at acidic temperature (pH less than 2 or more than 7).
5.Bicarbamide
It is also known as bromides, it forms several water-soluble salts and is widely used in the preparation of many products like dyes, hydrofluoric acid, explosives and antiseptics etc., due to its ability of forming very useful salts. It also forms a mixture with sulphur dioxide when heated above 50-60'C or at a high pressure. This reaction produces an excess of hydrogen bromide which has very strong irritating property and is used in the production of dyes, explosives etc.,. This is a colourless liquid with pungent odour and has high toxicity level.
6.Hydrocyanic acid
It is also known as prussic acid and it is a poisonous liquid. It has characteristic smell of bitter almond and must be handled with great care. It is used in the preparation of dyes, pesticides, pigments etc. It is very toxic and is highly corrosive in nature.
7.Hydrofluoric acid
It is also known as hydrogen fluoride or HF, it forms several water soluble salts and is mainly used in the manufacture of many industrial materials like teflon, polytetrafluoroethylene etc., due to its ability of forming very useful salts. It is highly corrosive in nature and has pungent odour. It has corrosive property of dissolving glass, ceramics etc., These are some of the acids that are manufactured industrially on a large scale due to their high demand by various industries and end users.
