    1. Al in the MAX phase of Ti-Al-C system can be rapidly diffused and selectively oxidized during the oxidation process, thus forming a dense Al2O3 film to prevent the substrate material from being further oxidized. The microstructure of the interface between Ti3AlC2 and Ti2AlC and the generated Al2O3 makes the system material have high temperature self-healing ability. At high temperatures, cracks or nicks on the surface of the material are filled with the oxide, thus restoring the original properties of the material, especially the mechanical properties. This property is of great significance to maintain the mechanical properties of materials, improve the stability and reliability of materials, so that it is more likely to be applied in high temperature environment.

    2. The rapid diffusion and selective oxidation of Al at high temperature of aluminum titano-carbide (Ti3AlC2 and Ti2AlC) realize the welding of the material itself and the welding between layers respectively. The fracture toughness of Ti3AlC2 and Ti2AlC laminated materials obtained by self-welding is significantly improved compared with single-phase materials.

    3. Using the weak bonding between Al lamellae and TiC lamellae in the MAX phase, the Al in Ti3AlC2 can be denuded by hydrofluoric acid (HF) to prepare new two-dimensional carbides, called "MXene", whose morphology is similar to that of graphene. MXene's excellent electrical conductivity makes it a potential material for lithium-ion batteries.
