Things you need to know about Artemisinin 99% Powder

In 2015,William C. Campbell, Satoshi mura and Tu youyou were awarded this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, according to the official Twitter feed of the Nobel Prize. Among them is the female scientist Tu youyou, a renowned Chinese pharmacologist.Tu youyou was the first to discover an effective anti-malarial extract from Artemisia annua in 1971, and in 1972 she isolated a new structure of the active ingredient artemisinin, which was awarded the second prize of the National Invention Award in 1979. In September 2011, she was awarded the Lasker Prize in Clinical Medicine for "the discovery of artemisinin, a drug used to treat malaria, which has saved millions of lives worldwide, especially in developing countries.

Artemisinin has a 100% antimalarial effect against both Plasmodium rodentium and Plasmodium monkeyi

Malaria is one of the world's most serious infectious diseases, along with tuberculosis and AIDS, and is known for its high mortality rate. According to the WHO, in 2008, 247 million people worldwide were infected with malaria, of whom more than one million died, most living in tropical and subtropical regions. Malaria kills a young child in Africa about every 30 seconds, and the traditional anti-malarial drug quinine has long since failed due to Plasmodium resistance.

Artemisinin and its derivatives, artesunate and artemether, are highly effective in the treatment of falciparum malaria, including cerebral malaria, and can be taken orally, injected intramuscularly or intravenously, or even made into suppositories.

The "Chinese miracle drug" has brought light to the world's fight against malaria. According to the WHO, one of the major reasons for the significant decline in malaria mortality in recent years in African countries such as Tanzania and Zambia is the widespread distribution of artemisinin-based combination drugs. In Zambia alone, malaria deaths fell by 66% in 2008 compared to 2000, thanks to a combination of mosquito-killing measures and artemisinin-based drug therapies.

    Pharmacological effects

Artemisinin is a sesquiterpene lactone with a peroxy group extracted from the stem and leaves of the plant Artemisia annua. Its effect on the ultrastructure of the inner red phase of Plasmodium falciparum is mainly a modification of the structure of the membrane system of Plasmodium falciparum. The drug acts first on the food vesicle membrane, the epithelium, the mitochondria, the endoplasmic reticulum, and in addition on the chromatin in the nucleus. It is suggested that the mode of action of artemisinin is mainly to interfere with the function of the epithelium-mitochondria. It is possible that artemisinin acts on the food vesicle membrane, thus blocking the earliest stages of nutrient uptake and causing the Plasmodium to suffer amino acid starvation relatively quickly, rapidly forming autophagic vesicles and continuously expelling them out of the worm, causing the Plasmodium to lose a large amount of cytoplasm and die. The uptake of tritium-labelled isoleucine by Plasmodium falciparum cultured in vitro also suggests that its mode of initiation of action may be inhibition of protozoan protein synthesis.
