Phthalic acid esters are industrially produced by esterification of phthalic anhydride with the corresponding alcohol in the presence of an acidic catalyst such as sulfuric acid or p-toluenesulfonic acid. The amount of acidic catalyst used is generally 0.2-0.5% based on phthalic anhydride. Phthalic anhydride and 2-ethylhexanol (isooctanol) are esterified in the presence of sulfuric acid or non-acidic catalysts such as titanates, stannous oxide, and aluminates.
