    Refractive Index:

    1.379

    Water Solubility:

    500 G/L (25 ºC)

    Storage Conditions:

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities: Keep container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place. Containers which are opened must be carefully

    Vapor Pressure:

    1.133 hPa (25 °C)

    Toxicity:

    LD50 orally in Rabbit: 840 mg/kg LD50 dermal Rabbit 3388 mg/kg

    Explosive limit:

The residue from a large scale atmospheric pressure distillation of trimethyl phosphate exploded violently. This was attributed to rapid decomposition of the ester, catalyzed by the acidic degradation products, with evolution of gaseous hydrocarbons. It is recommended that only small batches of alkyl phosphates should be vacuum distilled and in presence of magnesium oxide to neutralize any acid by-products, and to suppress the acid catalyzed reaction.

    Odor:

    Pleasant smelling

    OH:

    7.37e-12 cm3/molecule*sec

    Henrys Law Constant:

    7.20e-09 atm-m3/mole|Henry's Law constant = 7.2X10-9 atm-cu m/mole at 20 °C

    Experimental Properties:

    22.1% phosphorus; pour point: -46 °C|Specific gravity: 1.97 at 19.5 °C/0deg C|Hydroxyl radical reaction rate constant = 7.37X10-12 cu cm/molec-sec at 25 °C|Hydroxyl radical reaction rate constant = <6X10-20 cu cm/molec-sec at 25 °C

    Air and Water Reactions:

    Water soluble.

    Reactive Group:

Esters, Sulfate Esters, Phosphate Esters, Thiophosphate Esters, and Borate Esters

    Reactivity Profile:

TRIMETHYL PHOSPHATE may explode when heated. Residue from a large scale atmospheric pressure distillation of this chemical has exploded violently. It is incompatible with nitrates. (NTP, 1992). Organophosphates are susceptible to formation of highly toxic and flammable phosphine gas in the presence of strong reducing agents such as hydrides. Partial oxidation by oxidizing agents may result in the release of toxic phosphorus oxides.
