    Diethyl carbonate Use and Manufacturing
    Methods of Manufacturing
Anhydrous ethanol reacts with phosgene to produce ethyl chloroformate, and then continues to react with ethanol to form diethyl carbonate. Then it is washed and distilled to get the finished product. Raw material consumption quota: ethanol 1450kg/t, phosgene 2250kg/t.
    Uses
Diethyl carbonate is an important organic synthesis intermediate. Mainly used as solvents for nitrocellulose, cellulose ethers, synthetic resins and natural resins, intermediates for pesticides pyrethrins and phenobarbital. In the instrumentation industry, it is used to make fixing paint, which is used to seal and fix the cathode of electron tube.

Esters, Sulfate Esters, Phosphate Esters, Thiophosphate Esters, and Borate Esters

    Reactivity Alerts:

    Highly Flammable

    Reactivity Profile:

DIETHYL CARBONATE reacts with acids to liberate heat along with ethanol and carbon dioxide. Strong oxidizing acids may cause a vigorous reaction that is sufficiently exothermic to ignite the reaction products. Heat is also generated by the interaction with caustic solutions. Flammable hydrogen is generated by mixing with alkali metals and hydrides.

    Autoignition Temperature:

    445 °C

    Physical Dangers:

The vapour is heavier than air and may travel along the ground; distant ignition possible.
