    # Iodine (CAS 7553-56-2) ### Basic Information Chemical Name: Iodine Molecular Formula: I₂ Molecular Weight: 253.809 g/mol CAS Registry Number: 7553-56-2 EINECS Number: 231-442-4 ### Physical and Chemical Properties Iodine is a **dark grayish-black, lustrous crystalline solid** at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, with a characteristic pungent odor. It has a melting point of 113.7 °C and a boiling point of 184.3 °C, and is slightly soluble in water (0.03 g/100 mL at 20 °C) while highly soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, ether and carbon tetrachloride, as well as in aqueous potassium iodide solutions (forming soluble triiodide ions I₃⁻). It sublimes easily upon heating to form violet-colored iodine vapor, and the vapor condenses back into solid crystals upon cooling, a property known as **sublimation and deposition**. Iodine is a halogen element with moderate oxidizing properties, reacting with most metals and nonmetals under appropriate conditions. ### Main Applications 1. **Pharmaceutical & Sanitary Field**: A key raw material for preparing iodine tincture, iodophor and other disinfectants; an essential trace element for the human body, used in the production of iodine supplements and thyroid disease therapeutic drugs. 2. **Chemical Synthesis**: Serves as an oxidant, catalyst and iodinating agent in organic synthesis, widely applied in the production of fine chemicals, pesticides, dyes and pharmaceutical intermediates. 3. **Feed & Food Industry**: As an iodine additive in feed to prevent iodine deficiency in livestock and poultry; used in food fortification (e.g., iodized salt) and food preservatives. 4. **Industrial & Laboratory Use**: Applied in the manufacture of photographic materials, polarizing films and iodine-based reagents; a common analytical reagent in chemical laboratories for titration and qualitative analysis. 5. **Other Fields**: Used in the production of semiconductor materials, water treatment agents and leather tanning auxiliaries. ### Storage and Handling Notes Store in a **cool, dry, well-ventilated sealed container**, away from heat, open flame and oxidizing agents; avoid contact with skin and mucous membranes, as iodine vapor and solutions have irritant and corrosive effects on the human body. Operate with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as goggles and nitrile gloves.
