1. Description

DL-Menthol is a naturally occurring cyclic monoterpenol and the primary component of the essential oil of plants in the Mentha genus; its chemical name is 5-methyl-2-isopropylcyclohexanol. DL-menthol is a mixture of the racemic forms of menthol; it appears as colorless needle-like or columnar crystals, possesses a strong minty aroma and a cooling sensation, and has a taste that is initially pungent followed by a cooling sensation. It has a melting point of 32–44°C and a boiling point of 212–216°C. It is highly soluble in ethanol and fatty oils, and slightly soluble in water. It must be stored in a sealed container, protected from light, and kept in a cool place, away from high temperatures and strong light. As a classic topical cooling agent and local analgesic, this compound is widely used in the pharmaceutical, food, and personal care industries.

2. Application

(1) Topical analgesic and cooling products: Used as a topical analgesic in external formulations such as plasters, ointments, liniments, and sprays to relieve symptoms such as joint pain, muscle soreness, neuralgia, headaches, and itching from insect bites.

(2) Oral care products: Added to toothpaste, mouthwash, tooth powder, and other oral care products to provide a cooling sensation, mask unpleasant odors, and offer mild antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.

(3) Food and beverage flavoring: Used as a food additive in candies, chewing gum, beverages, ice cream, and other products to provide a cooling sensation and mint flavor. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies it as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS).
