1. Description

Pyrroloquinoline quinone is an aromatic tricyclic o-quinone compound that occurs naturally in various plants and microorganisms as a redox coenzyme. It is widely distributed in soil and food and is present in relatively significant amounts in breast milk. It appears as a reddish-brown to dark red powder, is highly soluble in water, and exhibits chemical properties characteristic of ascorbic acid, riboflavin, and pyridoxal phosphate. This compound possesses a unique “recharging” ability; both its oxidized and reduced forms can participate in redox cycles, and on a molar basis, its redox cycle efficiency is 100 to 1,000 times higher than that of ascorbic acid and similar compounds.
