The preparation method is to chlorinate 2-hydroxy 6-chlorobenzothiazole in a toluene solution, use pyridine as an acid binding agent, and ventilate chlorine at a temperature of 70°C to obtain the product.

2,6-Dichlorobenzothiazole is an intermediate of the herbicide thiazolachlor and an intermediate of pharmaceutical dyes.
