Clariant launches pyrolysis oil purification chemicals

ECHEMI 2022-11-22

On November 15, Clariant announced that it has launched an innovative product portfolio with flexible and customizable solutions for the emerging waste plastic chemical recycling market. The solution uses the novel HDMax catalyst and Clarit sorbent to purify pyrolysis oil produced from difficult-to-recycle mixed plastic waste.

According to Clariant, the new product is tailor-made for the removal of various pollutants with unstable composition in raw materials. It is not limited by process configuration factors and meets the flexibility requirements of manufacturers. The solution provided by Clariant also includes operational support throughout the entire product lifecycle, from start-up to process optimization. "Producers can benefit from efficient impurity removal methods to produce cracked oil that meets the requirements of ethylene plants," said Yan Kunze, president of Clariant's catalyst business, adding that cracked oil is produced through a chemical recycling process. The process breaks down polymers into their basic molecules, which are used as new raw materials in production. The process helps reduce the environmental burden of plastic waste that would otherwise be incinerated or landfilled, and provides a circular value chain for the production of basic chemicals.

Nina Karpynec, Head of Markets, Innovation and Sustainability at Clariant's Adsorbents & Additives business added: "Clariant is well-positioned in the purification of pyrolysis oils with over 100 years of expertise in the purification of edible oils and renewable fuel feedstocks. In addition, Clariant has a long history of producing adsorbents for various feedstocks and impurities, especially in redistillation and broad distillation.”
