Domestic potatoes are concentrated on the market, and farmers have called on the authorities to limit imports

foodmate 2022-12-09

The Southern Potato Growing Association of Shan State released information saying that when a large number of potatoes in Myanmar were on the market, it hoped that the authorities would introduce policies to protect domestically produced potatoes and reduce potato imports.

The relevant person in charge of the Southern Potato Planting Association in Shan State said that from June to September every year, domestic potato production is reduced, unable to meet the domestic market demand, and can only be imported from abroad. However, when a large number of domestic potatoes are on the market, the relevant departments need to restrict the import of potatoes. Now potatoes in many parts of Myanmar are on the market, but criminals are still smuggling potatoes into Myanmar, and if they are not controlled, the price of potatoes in Myanmar is bound to fall.

It is reported that recently, the price of imported potatoes on the market is 1800-2000 kyats, and the price of domestic potatoes is 1700-1800 kyats. Farmers said that although this year's price is relatively high, the cost of planting this year has increased, and at the current price, there are still great difficulties for farmers, and they cannot raise enough funds to prepare for next year's planting.
