The United States intends to expand the number of imported seafood regulatory acts to 570 species
On December 27, 2022, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced its intention to expand the government's program for seafood importers to declare the origin of their products. NOAA intends to increase the number of species under the Imported Seafood Regulation Act (SIMP) from 1,100 to 1,670. The move aims to combat species caught by illegal, unregulated and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The debate over the Simmp extension has been going on almost continuously since the scheme was first established in 2016, which calls for catch documentation and traceability of a wide range of seafood products deemed at risk from IUU practices. The bill initially required suppliers of seafood exported to the United States to provide appropriate documents to clear customs, otherwise they could be detained by customs or even refused. The Simp Act stipulates that fishery enterprises engaged in the import and export of the following aquatic products need to submit an international fishery trade license (Internatio) to NOAA in advance nal Fisheries Trade Permit, IFTP)。 These include Atlantic Cod, Pacific Cod, Blue Crab, Red King Crab, Dolphinfish, Mahi Mahi, Grouper, Red Snapper, Sea Cucumber, sharks, Swordfish and tuna (Albacore, Bigeye, Skipjack, Yellowfin, Bluefin), including albacore, bigeye, skipjack, yellowfin and bluefin tuna, about 13 imported seafood.
