Australian study finds a protein produced by the liver can lower blood sugar lev
Recently, researchers in Australia and other countries have discovered that a protein naturally produced by the liver can lower the blood sugar levels of lab rats suffering from diabetes, and hope to develop new drugs to treat type 2 diabetes in the future. The findings have been published in the new issue of the US journal Science Translational Medicine.
Dr. Magdalene Montgomery of the University of Melbourne, Australia, who participated in the study, said the researchers found that when the blood glucose levels in the lab rats are too high, the liver will secrete a protein called secretory modular calcium-binding protein 1, from which it is assumed that this protein may be related to the control of blood glucose levels. Animal experiments show that to the diabetic rats injected after processing of this protein, the rats not only lower blood glucose levels, fatty liver control, blood cholesterol levels are also lowered.
The researchers said that the existing type 2 diabetes treatment drugs are effective, but there are tolerability and side effects and other problems, they hope that based on this protein can be developed more effective than the existing drugs, the efficacy of a new drug more durable.
The next step for the research team is to work with pharmaceutical companies to develop a new drug based on the protein that only needs to be injected once a week, and to begin clinical trials as soon as possible.
