Givaudan promotes seaweed extract B‑Lightyl, which can reduce stains

On October 27th, Givaudan's Active Beauty Department announced on its official website the launch of B-Lightyl™, a natural ingredient to prevent and treat hyperpigmentation.

Based on consumers’ strong interest in clean and safe ingredients, Givaudan’s scientists extracted the sustainable ingredient B‑Lightyl™ from the elongated seaweed (Himanthalia elongata) native to Brittany, France, and reconstructed it into The link between fibroblasts and melanocytes, thereby inhibiting pigmentation.

 

Givaudan Marine Biotechnology Manager Anne Humeau said that Himanthalia elongata is a large algae that grows near the coast of Roses in Brittany, France. It uses the energy of sunlight to capture carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to produce a key component-seaweed polyphenols (phlorotannins). Givaudan discovered that these powerful marine molecules can activate the expression of stromal cell-derived growth factor SDF-1, a key target of pigmentation disorders. Therefore, this discovery can be used to develop a sustainable cosmetic ingredient that can control the skin pigmentation process.

 

Clinical trials have shown that B-Lightyl™ can significantly reduce the melanin content in the dark spots of white volunteers (decreased by -12.6% within one month, which is twice the effect of placebo), and the number of spots visible on the skin of Asians is significant Reduced (156% in one month), while the melanin content of pigmented spots on the skin of Africans decreased significantly (327% in 2 months).
