Mitsui Chemicals Expands Production Capacity of Polyurethane Dispersion (PUD) to Meet Market Demand for Single-Material Food Packaging

ECHEMI 2023-08-22

Recently, Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. announced that it will increase the production capacity of its Polyurethane Dispersion (PUD) to meet the market demand for single-material food packaging.

Specifically, Mitsui Chemicals' wholly-owned subsidiary, Mitsui Chemicals MC, will expand its PUD production facilities at the Shimizu plant. This expansion is expected to roughly double its domestic production capacity, which currently stands at 34,000 tons per year. Mitsui Chemicals stated that the capacity expansion project is scheduled to commence in February 2024, with completion expected in April 2025 and production starting in June 2025.

Mitsui Chemicals stated that the expanded production of its TAKELAC brand PUD, a water-based resin, offers excellent heat resistance, high-temperature gas barrier properties, and abrasion resistance. As an environmentally friendly product, they are widely used in the fields of paints and coatings, adhesives, binders, resin modifiers, sizing agents, and textile processing. In recent years, with the increasing demand for sustainable development, there has been a continuous growth in the demand for recyclable single-material food packaging, which has contributed to the increased demand for PUD products. Mitsui Chemicals aims to respond to this demand by actively strengthening its supply network.
