PPG Launches Copper-free Antifouling Coating for Marine Vessels

PPG announces the launch of PPG NEXEON™ 810 coating. It is an innovative copper-free antifouling coating. It was developed with a focus on ship performance, emissions reduction and sustainability.


Independent testing confirms that the ultra-smooth surface of PPG NEXEON™ 810 coating instantly increases power by up to 10%. It can also increase operating efficiency by up to 15% due to improved fouling control properties


Using PPG NEXEON™ 810 coating reduces fuel consumption and significantly reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It enables ships to maintain higher speeds. This helps shipowners and operators remain compliant with the International Maritime Organization’s Carbon Intensity Index (CII) requirements.


The coating's unique formula can reduce total greenhouse gas emissions by up to 25% compared to traditional antifouling coatings. It supports 60 days of idle time resistance with minimal speed loss.

 

Unique adhesive technology ensures the coating provides controlled and predictable solubility. This guarantees strong performance of the vessel throughout its operation. PPG NEXEON™ 810 coating is also suitable for electrostatic applications. It provides excellent color retention throughout the life of the container.

The copper-free technology in PPG NEXEON™ 810 coatings features significantly reduced biocide content. Its unique adhesive technology allows the biocide to gradually release and work near the surface. Once in the water, the combined action of sunlight and marine bacteria initiates the breakdown of these organic biocides.

 

The potential for electrostatic applications is a significant advantage not available with traditional antifouling coatings. Superior transfer efficiency via electrostatic spraying provides a uniform and ultra-smooth film with reduced overspray and waste. This can significantly reduce paint consumption and improve health and safety benefits compared to airless spraying.
