Eli Lilly's New Breakthrough: Tirzepatide Approved in China, Stock Soars on September 17th

ECHEMI 2024-07-22

On September 17th, the iconic logo of the American pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly shone brightly at the company's office complex in San Diego, California, revealing an important industry development. The China National Medical Products Administration has officially approved Eli Lilly's tirzepatide for use as a weight-loss drug, a decision that undoubtedly intensifies the competition between Eli Lilly and Denmark's Novo Nordisk in the critical Asian market.

In a Friday social media announcement, Eli Lilly revealed this good news, and its stock price rose 1.6% in afternoon trading, reaching $862.39 per share, reflecting investors' positive response to this new development. As the world's second-largest economy, China has the largest overweight and obese population globally, making the Chinese market's potential for such medications undeniable.

In June this year, Novo Nordisk's weight-loss drug Wegovy was approved in China, leading to a significant jump in the company's share price and demonstrating the massive potential of the Chinese market. Novo Nordisk's success has undoubtedly put pressure on Eli Lilly, prompting the latter to accelerate the approval process for tirzepatide in China.

However, an Eli Lilly spokesperson did not immediately respond to reporters' inquiries about when tirzepatide will be launched in the Chinese market and the specific dosage plans. It is worth noting that tirzepatide contains the active ingredients found in Eli Lilly's diabetes medication Mounjaro and weight-loss drug Zepbound, both of which have also been approved in China, showcasing the compound's versatility across multiple therapeutic areas.

The global battle for the weight-loss medication market between Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk is intensifying. It is predicted that the global weight-loss market will reach at least $100 billion by the end of this century. The obesity treatment drugs of these two companies belong to a class of medications initially developed for diabetes, known as GLP-1 agonists. GLP-1 agonists have been shown to help patients lose an average of 20% of their body weight, a remarkable effect that has sparked unprecedented market demand.

As global obesity rates continue to rise, the market prospects for GLP-1 agonist drugs are promising. However, the intensifying market competition also means that pharmaceutical companies need to continually innovate and optimize their products to meet the growing market demands and patient expectations. In this context, the battle between Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk will undoubtedly have a profound impact on the global obesity treatment landscape.
