China Launches Antitrust Probe DuPont Shares Plunge 12.75 Percent

ECHEMI 2025-04-09

On April 4, 2025, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) announced an antitrust investigation into DuPont China Holding Co., Ltd. for alleged violations of the Anti-Monopoly Law. The announcement triggered a sharp reaction in the stock market, with DuPont’s shares (NYSE.DD) dropping 8% pre-market and closing the day down 12.75%.

Founded in 1802, DuPont is a global leader in science-driven materials and solutions, serving industries such as electronics, healthcare, and construction. In 2024, it reported $12.4 billion in revenue, a 3% year-on-year increase, with organic business growth of 1%.

DuPont’s presence in China dates back to 1984, with the establishment of a Beijing office. Its Chinese subsidiary, founded in 1989, oversees 40+ local entities and employs approximately 6,000 staff. DuPont’s products, including Tedlar® PVF coatings, have been widely adopted in major projects such as the Shanghai World Laureates Forum venue and the Shanghai Stadium renovation.

The investigation marks another high-profile antitrust case in China. The Anti-Monopoly Law prohibits activities such as reaching monopolistic agreements, abusing market dominance, and conducting mergers that limit competition. Penalties include fines of 1% to 10% of annual turnover or up to ¥500,000 for unimplemented agreements.

DuPont has faced antitrust scrutiny in China before. In 2017, China’s Ministry of Commerce imposed restrictive conditions on the $130 billion Dow-DuPont merger, which later split into three entities: DuPont, Dow Chemical, and Corteva.

Analysts suggest the current probe could result in significant penalties, but it also highlights the Chinese government’s growing emphasis on fair market practices, particularly involving multinational corporations.
