Evonik Partners with Gas Malaysia to Advance Biogas Purification with SEPURAN Green
Evonik has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Gas Malaysia, the country’s leading natural gas supplier, to drive biogas purification into biomethane, solidifying Malaysia’s position as a leader in sustainable energy. The agreement was finalized during the launch of Malaysia’s first biomethane injection site, a facility built by Gas Malaysia. This milestone event, witnessed by Malaysia’s Minister of Plantation and Commodities, YB Datuk Seri Johari bin Abdul Ghani, was officially recognized by the Malaysia Book of Records.
Evonik’s SEPURAN® Green gas separation membranes are designed to efficiently purify biogas into high-quality biomethane that can be seamlessly integrated into local natural gas grids. These advanced membranes utilize a three-stage separation process, maximizing methane recovery while requiring minimal energy and no chemical additives. This innovative solution offers a groundbreaking alternative to conventional purification technologies.
Dr. Jan-Olaf Barth, Head of Evonik’s High-Performance Polymers Business Line, emphasized, “With SEPURAN® Green, we are transforming biomethane production. By integrating this cutting-edge technology into Malaysia’s energy infrastructure, we are opening new pathways to reduce carbon emissions and advance green energy solutions.”
Kenneth Kwok, Evonik Malaysia’s Managing Director, added, “This collaboration with Gas Malaysia is a major step towards accelerating renewable energy adoption in Malaysia. Together, we aim to build a cleaner, greener future while supporting the country’s long-term sustainability goals.”
Already deployed in over 1,300 biogas plants worldwide, SEPURAN® Green membranes are enabling the industry to transition to cleaner energy. By injecting biomethane into natural gas grids, the technology supports industrial applications and strengthens the global circular economy.
