Roquette invests in Magellan Life Sciences, adding more plant-based protein sweeteners

Recently, Roquette, a leading global supplier of plant-based raw materials, announced that its investment arm Roquette Ventures has invested in the British biotech company Magellan Life Sciences Ltd.

Magellan Life Sciences Ltd has developed a proprietary protein expression and fermentation platform that can produce a new generation of plant-based protein sweeteners. Its flagship product Brazzein sweetener can be used in food and beverages to reduce product calories. It is reported that the taste of this product is close to that of sucrose, but the sweetness is stronger, it can reduce calories without affecting the taste of the application/formulation, has no peculiar smell and can remain stable under heating or different chemical conditions.

The investment will be used to help expand production. The seed round was led by Roquette Ventures, and other investors included SOSV and three other European companies.
