Excessive doses of sucralose reduced the immune response in mice
The latest health research paper published in the internationally renowned academic journal "Nature" suggests that elevated doses of sucralose sweeteners can reduce immune response in mice. While there is no evidence to suggest that normal levels of sucralose intake may have an immunosuppressive effect, this study highlights the unexpected impact on immune response and mouse function caused by higher doses.
Sucralose is commonly used as a sugar substitute in a variety of foods because it has zero calories and is 600 times sweeter than regular sugar. It is widely considered safe, but concerns have been raised about long-term consumption of specific sweeteners, including sucralose.
To investigate the effects of overconsumption of sucralose, Karen Vousden from Cancer Research UK along with her colleagues gave mice high doses which were comparable to or exceeded daily maximum recommended dosages for humans (15mg per kg body weight according to European Food Safety Authority and five mg per kg body weight according to US FDA).
The results showed a decrease in proliferation and differentiation levels among T cells - the components that make up part of our immune system - suggesting that its regulation was affected by consuming large amounts of sucrose..The researchers found that sucrose affects T cell membranes, reducing their ability to effectively release signals and causing them to fail to respond accurately to infections, tumors and other models of immunity.
In conclusion, the authors state that their findings show how high doses can affect changes within the immune systems of tiny animals, thus highlighting the potential risks associated with excessive use.
