Vietnam Tuna Exports Hit 91 Million Dollars in May Surge 8 Percent Despite Global Challenges

ECHEMI 2025-07-02

According to data released by the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) on June 27, Vietnam’s tuna exports reached $91 million in May 2025, the highest monthly figure this year and an 8% year-on-year increase. This marks the first significant rebound in 2025, as exporters navigate uncertainties posed by changing U.S. trade policies and Middle Eastern geopolitical tensions.

US Market Recovery Drives Growth
In May, Vietnam’s tuna exports to the U.S. surged 37% month-on-month, driven by the impending expiration of the 90-day tariff reprieve on July 9. Exporters rushed to ship goods and clear customs to avoid punitive tariffs of up to 46%. The U.S., Vietnam’s largest tuna market, accounted for 41% of total shipments in the first five months of 2025. This rapid response underscores Vietnam’s agility and adaptability in adjusting export strategies under pressure.

EU Market Faces Headwinds
In contrast to U.S. growth, exports to the EU slumped, with May figures down 11% year-on-year. While shipments to traditional markets like the Netherlands and Italy grew at 11% and 15%, respectively, the pace was slower than in previous months. Exports to Germany dropped sharply, dragging down overall performance. Analysts attribute this to weak consumer demand and challenges in branding and traceability.

Middle East Tensions Slash Exports
The escalating conflict between Israel and Iran in May significantly disrupted Vietnam’s tuna exports to the Middle East. Shipments to Israel plunged 42% year-on-year, while exports to Saudi Arabia and the UAE fell 89% and 52%, respectively. Although the Middle East is not a primary market, its high-value orders mean the losses are impactful. VASEP warned of prolonged instability in the region, urging businesses to focus on more stable markets.

CPTPP Markets Boost Optimism
Exports to CPTPP member nations rebounded strongly in May, rising 25% year-on-year. Japan and Canada were key drivers, with robust demand helping offset declines in other regions. The preferential trade framework of the CPTPP provides a stable and predictable environment, making it a strategic focus for Vietnamese exporters.

Despite the May recovery, VASEP cautioned that challenges remain. The U.S. tariff decision in July could heavily impact third-quarter exports, while rising global shipping costs and raw material shortages continue to squeeze profit margins.
