1 Million Ton Green Methanol Project Signed in Fujian with 15 Billion Yuan Investment Global Partners Set Sights on Clean Energy Chain

ECHEMI 2025-08-17

On August 1, a major green methanol venture backed by Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group) officially launched in Beijing, marking a breakthrough for China’s clean energy sector. The project, located in Gulei, Fujian, boasts a total investment of 15 billion yuan and will produce 1 million tons of green methanol annually, along with sustainable aviation fuel and other downstream green products.

Leveraging offshore wind power and CP Group’s biomass resources, this initiative aims to build a complete “green energy + green chemicals” industry chain. The project will help absorb large-scale renewable electricity and provide new pathways for sustainable industrial transformation.

On November 15, 2024, COSCO Shipping, CP Group, and U.S.-based Freepoint Commodities signed a memorandum of understanding to deepen green methanol collaboration. The three parties will pool resources from Southeast Asia, apply advanced technologies, and build production bases that meet EU environmental standards. This alliance will support COSCO’s renewable energy substitution strategy and accelerate energy structure optimization.

By joining forces, the partners are positioning themselves at the forefront of the global green methanol market, signaling a new era for sustainable energy and international cooperation.
