Eli Lilly to Raise UK Mounjaro Price 170 Percent Monthly Cost Jumps from £122 to £330
Eli Lilly will hike the UK list price of its weight-loss drug Mounjaro by a dramatic 170% starting September, pushing the monthly cost for the highest dose from £122 to £330. The price increase also applies to the drug’s type 2 diabetes indication. This move comes as US policymakers pressure pharma companies to raise European prices, aiming to allow for price reductions in the American market.
The higher price will mainly affect private-pay patients in the UK, while those receiving Mounjaro through the National Health Service (NHS) will not be impacted due to a separate agreement. When Mounjaro was first launched in Britain, Lilly set an intentionally low price to speed up NHS availability. Now, the company says it is "aligning the list price more consistently" with other European nations.
This adjustment highlights the pharmaceutical industry’s response to US efforts to close the gap between American and European drug prices, which can be nearly triple in the US. As pressure mounts from the White House, Lilly’s CEO has indicated that long-term parity in drug pricing across regions is a goal, but warned that European governments are reluctant to pay more.
Lilly is working with private health providers and online pharmacies to ensure patients retain access to Mounjaro despite the sharp price jump. The drug was introduced in the UK in February last year, shortly before Novo Nordisk’s rival weight-loss drug Wegovy entered the same market.
