Kemira Launches First Biomass-balanced Polyacrylamide

ECHEMI 2022-02-14

Kemira has fully started production of its newly developed bio-based polyacrylamide polymer. The first commercial volumes were shipped to a sewage treatment plant in Helsinki Regional Environmental Services for trials.

The company says the polymer is water-soluble and offers the same technical specifications as its traditional equivalent. In addition to water treatment and other water-intensive industries, it can also be used in the energy industry and possibly in particularly demanding paper applications.

“The development of completely new and sustainable polymer chemistry is not overnight and is expensive and time-consuming. Especially for our technically demanding customer applications, finding similar bio-based alternatives has so far been a challenge challenges,” said Sampo Lahtinen, Vice President, R&D and Technology, EMEA.

Kemira produces new polymers in Italy and the UK based on biomass balance principles, where most of the fossil feedstocks are replaced by bio-based and renewable mass balance feedstocks certified by International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC)-Plus.
