Gingivitis
Gingivitis refers to acute or chronic inflammation of the gingival tissue. Gingiva refers to the oral mucosal epithelium covering the alveolar process and the neck of the tooth, as well as the connective tissue underneath. Dental plaque is the initiator of gingivitis. Common symptoms of gingivitis include bleeding, redness, swelling, and pain in the gums, which may develop into deeper layers and lead to periodontitis. Gingivitis can be caused by bacterial infection, external stimulation, and food impaction, but bacterial infection is the most common cause.
