Strong alkalines include sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite, sodium oxide, potassium oxide, and sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, calcium hydroxide, calcium oxide, ammonium hydroxide, etc., which have weaker corrosive effects. Bleaching powder contains 3% to 6% potassium hypochlorite. Strong alkaline compounds are widely used and are also contained in daily detergents, ditch cleaners, polishes, paint removers and perms. Most pediatric poisoning is caused by accidental ingestion. Local contact with strong alkalis can cause burns and ulcers, and oral absorption of strong alkalis can cause liver and kidney diseases.
