I. Definition and Basic Information

Anhydrous Lanolin is a natural oil extracted from wool. It is a refined form of wool wax, and its main components are esters of complex higher alcohols and fatty acids, along with a small amount of free alcohols and free acids. The name "anhydrous" means it contains no water, which gives it unique advantages in many applications.

II. Physical Properties

Appearance: It is usually a pale - yellow to amber - colored, soft - textured paste. This color and texture are determined by its chemical composition as well as the extraction and refining processes.
Solubility: It is lipophilic and can be dissolved in a variety of organic solvents such as chloroform and ether. It is almost insoluble in water, but it can form a stable water - in - oil (W/O) emulsion in water. This property makes it widely used in the formulation of emulsions and creams in cosmetics and skincare products.

Extraction Process

Refining Process

Storage Conditions:

Lanolin may gradually undergo autoxidation during storage. To inhibit this process, the inclusion of butylated hydroxytoluene is permitted as an antioxidant. Exposure to excessive or prolonged heating may cause anhydrous lanolin to darken in color and develop a strong rancidlike odor. However, lanolin may be sterilized by dry heat at 150°C. Ophthalmic ointments containing lanolin may be sterilized by filtration or by exposure to gamma irradiation.
