      Product Detail

Bentonite, also known as bentonite rock, bentonite rock or soapstone, is a kind of clay or clay rock with montmorillonite as its main mineral component. The name was given by the American scholar W.C.Knight in 1898 during his research on Cretaceous argillaceous rocks near Wyoming, USA. Bentonite is mainly composed of hydrated aluminosilicate minerals. In addition to the main mineral montmorillonite, it often contains illite, kaolinite, chlorite, halloysite, bedlite and other clay minerals. The associated components include zeolite minerals and calcite, quartz, feldspar, glass chips, rock chips, etc. The main chemical components of bentonite are silicon dioxide, aluminium oxide and water. The contents of magnesium oxide and iron oxide are also relatively high, as well as calcium, sodium, potassium, etc. Montmorillonite is a hydrated aluminosilicate containing a small amount of alkali and alkaline earth metal ions. The unit cell of montmorillonite is composed of two silicon-oxygen tetrahedral layers sandwiching one hydrogen-oxygen octahedral layer. The isomorphic substitution of cations with different valence endows it with layer charges and multiple properties such as adsorption and cation exchange. Bentonite can be classified into different properties based on the types of exchangeable cations in its montmorillonite and the magnitude of layer charges, such as sodium-based, calcium-based, magnesium-based, aluminum-based, etc. These properties can also transition with each other, that is, natural transformation. People take advantage of this property to artificially modify bentonite as needed in production.
