Combines with water with evolution of heat.|Undergoes monoclinic (beta) to monoclinic (alpha) transition at 3 °C and monoclinic (beta) to hexagonal (alpha) transition at 4 °C.|Enthalpy of fusion: 29.7 kJ/mol at 856 °C|Colorless orthorhombic crystals; MP: 100 °C; density: 2.25 g/cu cm; solubility: 30.7 g/100 g water at 25 °C; insoluble in ethanol /Sodium carbonate monohydrate/|Odorless; white, small crystals or crystalline powder; alkaline taste; density 1.55.
