Sumitomo Chemical Advances Ethanol-to-Propylene Technology with New Pilot Plant
Introduction:
Sumitomo Chemical, a Japanese multinational company, has commenced the construction of a pilot plant that aims to produce propylene directly from ethanol. The project has received support from the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization's (NEDO) Green Innovation Fund. Sumitomo plans to complete the pilot plant construction at the Sodegaura site in the first half of 2025, accelerating the process of bringing this technology to the market.
Current Propylene Production and Ethanol as an Alternative:
Currently, propylene is primarily produced through the cracking of fossil resources such as naphtha. Ethanol, on the other hand, can be produced from biomass sources like sugarcane and corn. Additionally, there is an expectation to produce ethanol from waste materials such as combustible waste, plastic waste, or carbon dioxide using scalable technologies.
Sumitomo Chemical's Ethanol-to-Propylene Pilot Plant:
Sumitomo Chemical's newly established pilot plant will utilize ethanol to produce propylene and is developing a proprietary process for this ethanol-to-propylene conversion. This process offers advantages in terms of lower costs and compactness compared to the current methods involving multiple intermediates for propylene production. Additionally, the byproduct of hydrogen gas generated during propylene production has commercial value.
Commercialization and Patent Sale Plans:
Sumitomo Chemical plans to begin commercial production using this ethanol-to-propylene process in the early 2030s. Simultaneously, the company intends to sell process patents, leveraging its intellectual property rights. This move aims to capitalize on the stable demand for propylene while providing an opportunity for other manufacturers to adopt the innovative technology.
