In a significant update, the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare of Japan has issued Jianshengfa 1107 Announcement No. 1 on November 7, 2023, bringing about revisions to the specifications and standards governing food and food additives. The key modifications outlined in the announcement are as follows:

Japan Revises Food and Food Additive Standards
1. Maximum Residue Limits for Agricultural and Veterinary Drugs: The revision involves the establishment of maximum residue limits for various agricultural and veterinary drugs, including the new fungicide inpyrfluxam, in specific food items. Detailed information on these changes can be found in the accompanying table.
2. Restrictions on L-Cysteine Salt Usage: A noteworthy provision states that the use of the food additive L-cysteine salt is prohibited except in the case of bread and natural juices. However, it is clarified that when utilized as a seasoning substance, L-cysteine salt falls outside the scope of this restriction.
3. Exemption for Zinc Oxide: Zinc oxide is granted an exemption from the formulation of maximum residue limits in food.
The implementation of these revisions is effective immediately from the date of issuance. It is essential to note that the alterations to maximum residue limits for five compounds, including the new fungicide inpyrfluxam, will come into effect one year from the issuance date, allowing for a transitional period.
