Adama's Acephate insecticide's crop registration in Brazil was extended to beans and peanuts
Adama recently announced that its insecticide Magnum (Acephate) has successfully obtained registration extensions for beans and peanut crops in Brazil. The approval makes Magnum an important tool for managing major pests of these crops, including aleyrodid (Bemisia tabaci), leaf hoppers (Empoasca kraemeri) and thrips (Enneothrips flavens). These pests seriously threaten the productivity of related crops.
Beans
In the case of beans, aleyrodid(Bemisia tabaci) is a stubborn pest that is difficult to control and has long plagued producers in several producing regions, especially in the interior of Sao Paulo and Parana. This pest is responsible for spreading the golden Mosaic virus, which is considered one of the main viruses affecting legumes. In some cases, farmers have had to suspend bean planting at certain times of the year due to severe occurrences of aleyrodid(Bemisia tabaci). The role of Magnum is to effectively control aleyrodid(Bemisia tabaci), thereby helping to manage the spread of the virus.
Peanut
With peanuts, Magnum will focus on controlling thrips (Enneothrips flavens), one of the crop's major pests. Pests occur most severely during the critical period of the crop growth cycle, which is between 25 and 60 days after planting. These insects cause leaves to deform, producing silvery streaks and reducing the plant's ability to photosynthesise, which can have a significant negative impact on productivity and can reduce crop yields by 10 to 75 per cent.
Adama said the expansion of Magnum's registration on pulses and peanuts marked an important advance in pest management for these crops. Given the increasing pressure on insects such as whiteflies and thrips, it is critical to provide producers with effective integrated pest management tools. This not only enables the rotation of active ingredients, but also minimizes the development of pest resistance to insecticides.
Magnum has previously demonstrated excellent control in the production of cotton, potatoes, citrus, soybeans and tomatoes. Now, it will also help control key pests in pulses and peanuts, promising to significantly increase the productivity and economic efficiency of these crops.
